The basal nuclei receives input from the entire cerebral cortex (except for the visual and auditory areas), substantia nigra, and other nuclei of the brain. Functions of the basal nuclei include initiating, starting, stopping, and monitoring the intensity of movements initiated by the cerebral cortex especially movements that are slow and stereotyped like arm swinging movements that occur during walking, inhibiting unnecessary movements, and our ability to perform several activities at once.
